While I agree that antidepressants should be an option for anyone facing depression, I don't agree that they should be used by everyone. Many of these drugs can cause severe side effects, some are addictive or have "backlash" symptoms when discontinued, many only work for 65-75% of the population, and some people may simply choose not to use a medication for their depression. Since depression comes in many manifestations for many reasons, there never will be one answer for everyone.

That being said, my mother has found a lot of help with her PTSD since she found an antidepressant that works for her. I also found an antidepressant useful in the short term ten years ago, although I am still dealing with the damage it did to my body.

When I had post traumatic stress following my ostomy antibiotics were an available option however for me it wasnt the right way to go, dont get me wrong I agree for many they are the correct form of treatment but one solution doesnt fit all and I was one that recognised my depression but wanted to overcome it a different way. It wasnt easy I dont believe anyone in the throws of depression finds any easy even getting out of bed is a struggle, however for me looking back it was the right choice. With the support of my husband children and family and with the agreement of my doctor I did it my way as the song goes, had things not gone right I was prepared to ask for medication. We are all different and there are no wrong or right to taking or not taking antidepressants I am now 6 years on in good health and enjoying all aspects of my life and I thank God for my stability of emotions.

Everyone is different, every situation, and every individual body chemistry.  Depression should be taken seriously though.  We forget that depression can be a terminal illness.  I' ve recently attended a couple of funerals, and those people may have made it if only certain things weren't said:  only stupid people take antidepressants;  just suck it up;  you just have to decide to be happy.  If therapy and sunshine aren't enough, sometimes, a pill can help.
